Are deleted DMs really deleted?

“Delete for me” and “delete for everyone” tell you what happens on the screen, not what happens on the server. In almost every messaging app, delete removes a message from the thread — while copies persist in backups, on the recipient's device, in notification caches and, for a period, on the company's servers.

What happens when you delete a message?

For you, it disappears from the thread. For everyone else it usually does not: “delete for me” hides your copy only, “delete for everyone” tries to remove both sides within a time limit, and the recipient's screenshot, saved media and cloud backup survive regardless. The platform may also retain the message for a period.

What “delete” usually means

Platform by platform

What delete does on the major apps
App Delete for everyone? Backups Server retention Recipient can keep
WhatsApp Yes, with a time limit Yes — chat backups May retain for safety/legal Yes
Instagram DMs Yes, your side Limited Yes, per policy Yes
Snapchat Remove from thread Memories if saved Yes, for a period Yes
Discord Yes, your messages No local backup Yes, plus logging bots Yes
iMessage No true unsend for received iCloud backups N/A (device-based) Yes

The copies that always survive

Whatever the app's delete promises, five copies are outside its control: the recipient's screenshot, their saved media or camera roll, their screen recording, a notification preview captured on the lock screen, and a server-side logging bot if the message was in a channel. Deleting changes what you can see; it doesn't change what they can.

If you need it actually gone

Only a method where the file never enters the chat can promise that. A Furtiva link lives outside both histories: 24-hour expiry or 20 views, invisible to search engines, no permanent account, and a sender-held unsend token that deletes the file wherever it's been opened. For messages you've already sent, unsend any Furtiva link you control, and delete the file from any account you own before it spreads.

Frequently asked

Does deleting a message delete it for the other person?

Only “delete for everyone” does, and only within its time limit — and even then, it can't remove a screenshot, a saved media file or a backup copy. “Delete for me” never touches their copy.

Does WhatsApp delete messages from its servers?

WhatsApp says deleted messages are removed, but it may retain data for safety and legal reasons, and it can live on in chat backups you or the other person hold. Deletion is not a guarantee of erasure.

Can Discord mods see deleted messages?

Mods can't read DMs, but server logging bots often store channel messages — including deleted ones and attachments — and Discord itself retains data per its policy.

What's the only way to send something that's actually gone?

Keep the file out of the chat entirely: a link that expires, can't be searched, isn't stored in a permanent account, and can be unsent by the sender. That's what a Furtiva link does.

Where do deleted Instagram DMs go?

They leave your thread, but Instagram retains data for a period under its policy, and the recipient's copy, screenshot or notification preview is unaffected.

Are deleted iMessage texts really gone?

On the recipient's device, no — deleting on your side never removes their copy. Both devices may also still hold the message in iCloud backups until those backups roll over.

Can you see a deleted message on Telegram?

Only if it was saved elsewhere — a screenshot, an export, a notification preview, or a secret-chat copy on the other device. Telegram's own “delete for everyone” removes the thread entry on both sides.

Does deleting a message remove it from backups?

Not reliably. Chat backups are point-in-time copies: a message deleted today can persist in a backup made yesterday until that backup is replaced or expires.
