Does Snapchat tell you when someone screenshots or screen records?

Yes for screenshots, not reliably for screen recording. Snapchat notifies the sender when someone screenshots a snap or chat, but screen recording often goes unflagged, and a second phone's camera is never detected.

Snapchat is the app most people associate with “it disappears after they look”. It warns you about screenshots, hides snaps behind a replay window, and offers a My Eyes Only vault. Each of those is a real feature — and each has a gap that the alert doesn't tell you about.

Does Snapchat notify you when someone screen records?

Not reliably. Snapchat's alert is built for a standard screenshot; screen recording — the phone's built-in recorder or a second device — usually produces no notification at all. Treat the screenshot warning as best-effort detection rather than a guarantee that you'll know every time a snap is kept.

What the screenshot alert covers — and misses

When a recipient takes a normal screenshot of a chat or snap, Snapchat tries to notify the sender. That's a detection, not a block. It does not cover:

The copies Snapchat doesn't warn you about

Snap media is also stored on Snapchat's servers for a period rather than only on the devices, and it can be requested in data exports. “It deleted from my chat” is a UI statement, not proof the bytes never existed.

What can keep a Snap alive
Route Sender notified? Stored where?
Screenshot Usually Recipient's device
Screen recording Rarely Recipient's device
Second camera No Nowhere digital
Replay (once per snap) Yes — replay icon in chat Inside Snapchat
Account data / Memories No Snapchat servers

My Eyes Only isn't a safety net for the sender

My Eyes Only locks snaps inside the recipient's own account. It protects them from someone scrolling their phone — it does nothing about screenshots, imports to a camera roll, or sharing to another app. On most devices a saved snap can be exported from Memories with a tap.

If you want a link that behaves better

If your goal is “they can look, then it's gone”, a Snapchat attachment is a fragile way to get there. A Furtiva link gives you 24-hour expiry, a 20-view allowance, invisibility to search engines, no permanent account, and — unlike Snapchat — an unsend token that kills the link wherever it has been opened, even after viewing. It won't stop a screenshot; it will stop the file from living on.

Frequently asked

Does Snapchat tell you when someone screenshots?

Usually, for a standard screenshot — Snapchat notifies the sender. It does not reliably detect screen recording, a second camera, or modified clients, so treat the alert as a best effort.

How does Snapchat know you took a screenshot?

The phone's operating system tells it. iOS and Android let an app know when a screenshot is taken while it is on screen, and Snapchat turns that signal into the alert in the chat. That's also why a second phone's camera triggers nothing: the recording happens outside the device Snapchat is running on.

Can someone save a Snapchat without you knowing?

Yes — via screen recording, a second phone, or a modified client. The notification system is not a guarantee that the only copy is the one that vanished.

Are opened snaps really deleted?

They're removed from the chat after viewing, but Snapchat stores snap data on its servers for a period and it can surface in account data exports. “Deleted” here means no longer visible in the app.

Is there a way to send a photo so it can't be kept?

No — a screenshot can't be prevented. What you can control is the file's afterlife: expiry, view limit, search invisibility and unsend, all of which a Furtiva link provides.

Does Snapchat notify screen recording?

Usually not. The screenshot alert is designed for screenshots; the OS screen recorder and a second camera generally produce no notification, so the sender is not reliably told.

Can Snapchat detect a screen recorder?

Not dependably. Snapchat relies on the signal the phone's operating system gives it, and that signal is built around screenshots. A built-in screen recorder or another phone filming the screen leaves the sender without a reliable warning.

Does Snapchat notify screenshots on Android?

Normally yes — Snapchat tries to alert the sender of a standard screenshot on Android as well as iPhone. How reliable that is varies by Android version and device, so treat it as best effort on both platforms.

Can you screenshot Snapchat without a notification?

The alert is best effort, so some captures go unreported — but a silent screenshot is still a copy the sender never agreed to. If you are the sender, assume anything you send can be kept, and choose the photo and the link's lifetime accordingly.

Can you screenshot a Snapchat story without them knowing?

Snapchat does not send a story screenshot alert to the poster — the notification applies to chats and snaps. Recording a story likewise notifies no one.

Does Snapchat tell you if someone replays your snap?

Yes. Snapchat shows the sender a replay icon in the chat when a snap is replayed. The replay itself is still one more viewing you can't prevent once the snap has been sent.
