How to send private photos on any app — without leaving a permanent copy
Every app has a “private” mode. None of them mean the same thing. WhatsApp hides the photo from the gallery but keeps it in the chat. Instagram dims it for one view but still holds it on Meta's servers. Telegram's self-destruct works — until someone screenshots. The honest guide below explains what each app actually does, and then shows the one method that removes the permanent copy entirely.
What “private” means inside the big apps
The table below is what's left after you hit send. None of these apps is “bad” — they are built to keep a history. The problem is that when you want to send one photo to one person, a permanent, synchronized, searchable history is exactly what you don't want.
| App | What stays behind | How long it lasts | Original quality? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Both chat histories; Google Drive / iCloud backup by default | “Delete for everyone” ≈ 2 days | No — downscaled to ~2 MP | |
| Instagram (DM) | Meta servers + the thread | Unsend DM; view-once | No — re-encoded |
| Telegram | Telegram cloud (secret chats stay on device) | Delete for everyone; self-destruct in secret chats | Only with “send as file” |
| Snapchat | Snapchat servers | Ephemeral by design | No |
| iMessage / SMS | iCloud + both devices (SMS: carrier) | “Undo Send” ≈ 2 min | No — re-encoded |
| Discord | Discord servers, indefinitely | Delete the message anytime | No — re-encoded |
| Furtiva link | Encrypted file, no account attached | ≤ 24 h or 20 views; unsend anytime | Yes — served byte-for-byte |
- Public feed permanent and searchable
- Cloud drive until you remember to revoke
- Chat attachment both histories + cloud backups
- Furtiva link deleted ≤ 24 h or on the view limit
App by app
End-to-end encrypted in transit, but the photo is written into both chat histories and uploaded to Google Drive / iCloud backups by default — where the end-to-end encryption no longer applies. Photos are also downscaled to roughly 2 MP on send. “Delete for everyone” has a window of about two days and stops working if the other person has already backed up the chat.
Instagram (DMs)
View-once, vanish mode and “keep in chat” all still run through Meta's servers. View-once prevents a second in-app look, not a screenshot — and the recipient may still save the media.
Telegram
Secret chats offer a real self-destruct timer, but only in secret chats — and the recipient can still screenshot or photograph the screen. Outside secret chats, photos live in Telegram's cloud and are re-compressed unless you send them as a file.
Snapchat
The photo is ephemeral in the app, but Snapchat stores it on its servers, has been breached, and screenshots are only reported to you — which creates a false sense of safety.
iMessage and SMS
iMessage is encrypted in transit and stored in iCloud; SMS is neither encrypted nor private. “Undo Send” works only within a window of about two minutes and requires both devices to be on recent OS versions.
Discord
DMs are stored indefinitely, media is re-encoded, and free accounts are capped at 25 MB per file. For a personal file, the pipe is both small and permanent.
The platform-independent option: a private link
Instead of attaching the photo to a chat, upload it once and paste a link. The file never enters the app's storage, so there is nothing to scroll back to, back up, or leak in a sync. That is the whole idea behind private photo sharing on Furtiva:
- One link per photo. Works in any app — WhatsApp, Instagram DM, SMS, email, Discord, a note to yourself.
- Invisible to search engines. Links live under
/p/, blocked in robots.txt and served withnoindex. A leaked link can't be Googled. - Self-destructing. Gone within 24 hours, or sooner once the view allowance runs out (20 views for photos). Deletion is permanent.
- Unsend anytime. The sender holds a secret token that kills the link instantly, even after it has been opened.
- No account, either side. The recipient opens it in a browser — no app, no sign-up.
- Original quality. Photos up to 25 MB and videos up to 250 MB, served byte-for-byte, never re-compressed.
How to send one, step by step
- Open furtiva.app and pick the photo (or drop it on the page). It uploads immediately, encrypted at rest.
- Copy the private link. You also get an unsend token that stays in your browser.
- Paste it into whatever app you already use. No “open in app” friction for the recipient.
- Change your mind? Tap unsend. The link dies everywhere it was pasted, and the file is permanently purged.
Frequently asked
What is the most private way to send a photo?
A link that is not stored in a permanent account, is excluded from search engines, and expires on its own. Furtiva gives one private link per photo: 24-hour expiry, 20-view allowance, invisible to search engines, and unsendable at any time.
Are photos sent on WhatsApp private?
Chats are end-to-end encrypted in transit, but the photo lives in both chat histories and backs up to Google Drive or iCloud by default, where end-to-end encryption no longer applies. Media is also re-compressed. A self-destructing link removes those permanent copies.
Can you send private photos on Instagram?
Instagram DMs support view-once and vanish mode, but the photo still travels through Meta's servers and can be screenshotted. A private link stays out of any social account and gives the sender an off switch.
Do recipients need an app or account?
No. A Furtiva link opens in any browser on any phone — no app, no account, no sign-up for either person.
How big can a private photo or video be?
Photos up to 25 MB (JPEG, PNG, WEBP, GIF) and videos up to 250 MB (MP4, WEBM, MOV). Files are stored and served byte-for-byte, with no re-compression.
