Why are my WhatsApp photos blurry — and how to send the original

Your phone takes 12-megapixel photos. Chat apps deliver about 2. WhatsApp downscales every photo to roughly 2 MP unless the sender hunts down the per-photo “HD” toggle — and even then the image is re-encoded. Telegram, iMessage and Discord re-encode in their own ways. If you've ever zoomed into a photo you sent and found mush, that's why.

Why are my WhatsApp photos blurry?

WhatsApp downscales every photo to roughly 2 megapixels (about 1600 px on the long edge) and re-encodes it with heavier compression. The “HD” toggle raises that ceiling, but it is a per-photo setting most senders never find — and the image is still re-encoded. Only sending the file itself preserves the original.

The fix: send the original, not the attachment

Furtiva never touches your bytes. Files are stored and served byte-for-byte as uploaded — no compression, no re-encoding, no quality toggle to hunt for. You upload once, get one private link, and the recipient opens the identical original in their browser:

How much each app shrinks your photo

The numbers vary with the app version and the sender, but the pattern is consistent: an ordinary photo loses most of its pixels on send.

What the main apps do to a 12 MP photo
App Typical result Re-encodes? Keeps metadata? Lossless option?
WhatsApp ≈ 2 MP (≈ 1600 px on the long edge) Yes No — stripped Per-photo “HD” toggle, still re-encoded
Instagram (DM) ≤ 1080 px wide Yes No No — no file sending
Telegram Original with “send as file”; otherwise re-compressed Only the normal photo Yes, as a file Yes — “send as file”
iMessage Re-encoded to ~2–4 MP Yes Partial Not reliable
Discord Re-encoded, capped by plan Yes No No
Furtiva link Identical to the original (up to 25 MB) No Yes — intact Yes, by default

How to check if your photo was compressed

Before blaming the app, you can confirm it in under a minute:

  1. Compare the file size. On your phone, check the original size (Photos → Info) against the file the recipient saved. A drop from 12 MB to 400 KB all but confirms re-compression.
  2. Check the pixel dimensions. A 12 MP photo is about 4000 × 3000 px. If the received file is around 1600 px on the long edge, it was downscaled.
  3. Look at the metadata (EXIF). Free tools show date, camera and GPS. If they've gone, the app re-encoded the file.
  4. Do the zoom test. Zoom all the way into both files; the re-compressed one shows blocking and lost texture.

How to send full quality on each app

WhatsApp

When sending a photo, tap “HD” before you confirm. It avoids the most aggressive downscale and helps with size — but the file is still re-encoded. For the original, use “Document”, which sends the file untouched.

Telegram

Send as a file (clip → File) instead of picking the photo. It is the only way Telegram delivers the original bytes.

Instagram, iMessage and Discord

There is no “full quality” option that guarantees the original: these platforms re-encode by design. For a photo that has to come out intact, a private link that serves the file byte-for-byte is the only reliable option.

Full quality and privacy

The usual workarounds for compression — email to yourself, cloud-drive links, “documents” mode — all leave a permanent copy somewhere you don't control. Furtiva gives you the opposite trade: the original quality lasts exactly as long as you want it to. Share the moment at full resolution, let the link expire, unsend it if you change your mind. Nothing lingers, nothing is searchable.

Frequently asked

Why do my photos get blurry on WhatsApp?

WhatsApp downscales images to roughly 2 megapixels to save bandwidth. The 'HD' toggle exists but is a per-photo setting most recipients never find — and it still re-encodes the image.

How do I send a photo without losing quality?

Send a link to the original file instead of the attachment. Furtiva stores and serves photos byte-for-byte — no downscaling, no re-encoding, no metadata stripping.

How can I tell if a photo was compressed?

Compare the file size and pixel dimensions before and after sending, check whether the EXIF metadata is still there, and zoom all the way in to look for blocking. A large drop in size or pixels confirms re-compression.

Does Furtiva compress photos?

No. Files are stored and served exactly as uploaded, in full resolution. The recipient gets the identical original.

What photo formats and sizes are supported?

JPEG, PNG, WEBP, and GIF up to 25 MB, plus videos (MP4, WEBM, MOV) up to 250 MB — also uncompressed.

Do both sides need an account?

No. Furtiva is free with no sign-up. The link opens in any browser, on any phone.

How long does the full-quality photo stay available?

At most 24 hours, or sooner once its 20-view allowance runs out — then it's permanently deleted. You can also unsend it instantly at any time.

Are Instagram DMs blurry too?

Yes. Instagram DMs cap photos at about 1080 px wide and re-encode them, and there is no full-quality file option in the DM composer at all.

Does Telegram compress photos?

Only if you send it as a photo. Choosing “send as file” (clip → File) delivers the untouched original; the normal photo path re-compresses it.

Why are my iMessage photos blurry?

iMessage re-encodes images to roughly 2–4 MP before delivery. There is no reliable “send original” toggle, so a link is the dependable route for full resolution.

Does Discord compress images?

Yes — Discord re-encodes uploaded media and caps file size by plan, so both the pixels and the file size change before the recipient sees it.
