One-time photo links: send a photo that can be viewed once
A one-time photo link is a URL that shows a photo once and then stops working. The first open spends the only view; after that the link says the photo is gone and the file behind it is deleted. It works in any chat, email or DM, and the person you send it to needs no app and no account.
How a view-once link works
- You upload the photo and allow one view. The link is created with a single view and a lifetime, the deadline if it is never opened.
- You paste the link wherever you talk. WhatsApp, Instagram, Discord, iMessage, email: the chat only ever holds a link, never the photo.
- They open it once. The photo loads, and that load is the view.
- The link dies. A reload, a forward or a second device gets a “this photo is gone” page, and the file is deleted rather than hidden.
On Furtiva, a chat app's link preview shows no photo and loading the page doesn't count; the view is spent when the photo loads. One catch: opening the link yourself to check it uses the view.
One-time link vs. WhatsApp “view once”
WhatsApp, Instagram and Telegram all have a view-once mode for photos. They work well inside the app, but only there: both people need the same app and an account, and the photo travels through that company's chat. A one-time link is the same idea, but it works anywhere a link can be pasted.
| Option | Works in | Recipient needs | Sender can cancel before it's opened |
|---|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp view once | WhatsApp only | WhatsApp account | Yes, “delete for everyone” within the app's window |
| Instagram view once (DM) | Instagram only | Instagram account | Yes, unsend the message |
| Telegram view once | Telegram private chats | Telegram account | Yes, delete the message |
| Furtiva one-time link | Any chat, email or text | A browser | Yes, unsend kills the link and deletes the file |
What a one-time link can't stop
No link and no app can stop a screenshot, a screen recording or a second phone pointed at the screen. One view keeps the photo from being reopened, forwarded or found later; it can't control what happens during that one view. Send it to someone you trust, and read can a photo be screenshot-proof? before you rely on it.
One view, or a few?
- Once. A secret, a code, or a private photo meant for a single look. The strictest setting: if their connection drops mid-load, the view is gone.
- 3 or 5 views. When they might want a second look, or you're not sure the first open will work. Still gone after that, and still within the deadline.
- 20 views. A small group, each person opening the same link.
- Pair it with a short lifetime. The lifetime closes the link even if nobody opens it. Ten minutes leaves no window for an unopened link to sit in a chat for days.
One-time links vs. temporary links
A one-time link is the strictest kind of temporary photo link. A temporary link ends on a clock, on a view count, or both; a one-time link sets the view count to one. If you just want a photo not to stick around, a temporary link with a few views is friendlier. If it should be seen once and never again, use one view.
Make a one-time photo link
- Open furtiva.app. There's no sign-up screen and no email.
- Pick a photo or video (photos up to 25 MB, videos up to 250 MB). It uploads right away and is encrypted at rest.
- Set “Can be opened” to “once” and choose when it disappears: 10 minutes, 1 hour, 6 hours or 24 hours.
- Send, then paste the link. Keep the tab or your history: you can unsend it any time until it's gone.
Frequently asked
What is a one-time photo link?
A link that shows a photo once and then stops working. The first open uses the only view, and the file is deleted afterwards. It's also called a view-once or self-destructing photo link.
Can I send a view-once photo without WhatsApp or Instagram?
Yes. A one-time link works in any app, email or text message, and the recipient only needs a browser. On Furtiva, set “Can be opened” to “once” before you send.
What happens if they never open it?
The link still dies when its lifetime runs out (10 minutes to 24 hours, your choice) and the file is deleted. You can also unsend it earlier.
Does the link preview in a chat use up the view?
Not on Furtiva. The preview shows no photo, so nothing is spent until the photo actually loads. Opening the link yourself does use the view.
Can a one-time photo be screenshotted?
Yes. No link or app can stop a screenshot or a photo of the screen. A one-time link stops reopening, forwarding and later discovery, not what happens during the one view.
Does it work for videos?
Yes, but a video player loads a file in several pieces, so video views are counted approximately: one view allows about one play.
